The potter, a familiar term in our village, the Thrapsano of Heraklion which constitute the centre of Cretan pottery and one of the largest in Greece. Pottery represents our ancestral traditional art rooted deeply as much as the island of Crete.References on our village including its contribution to the pottery art may identified both in written historical records of the Venetian period of 1379 and in folklore at traditional sayings which are short poems called madinades, like this one: diale ca pothamenous tou, tou paliothrapsanioti pou kanei ta stamnia baria ke katalei tin nioti;that demonstrates the diffusion of pottery from Thrapsano during ancient period. The vedema was a potters group on tour who roamed the villages during the summer, made and fired on site in large wood kiln, Jars that would be very difficult to be transported in ancient times. Nowadays there are private workshops which performing pottery respecting the traditional techniques.
...thus in my own workshop we make ecological creations by the clay land of our land, the water of our mountains along with the knowledge of the art of our ancestors for you.





The potteries are made from clay. The clay comes from the dissolution of rocks in grains. The size of the grains determines the quality of the clay. The main components of clay are aluminium, silicon and water. The chemical name is hydrated aluminium silicate with the chemical formula Al2O3.2SiO3.2H2O. The purest form of clay is the mineral kaolin which consist the main component of porcelain. The clay can be found on the surface or underground in the form of deposits with different purity and quality. During its extraction has the form of pellets which are melted after treatment in tanks with water. This way is extracted and purified by precipitation the payload sedimentary. The clay is used or as a type of clay, or as mixture of different types of clays to get the wishing result. The most common form is like a soil in big sacks. The roots of the extraction, the treatment and the creation of potteries with clay reach the ancient times. The creations form clay were the plates, cups, jugs and stored items for food, oil, olives, etc, of people from birth of the human civilization. With various traditional techniques reaching the mists of human civilization, are taking form on wheel and durability fired in the wood –kiln, for being ready to be used from you or to decorate your place...
